It’s Sunday and I’m feeling really…overworked in fitness.  Maybe?

I’ve been going so hardcore lately – “upping” it in my classes, and going all out in my own personal workouts, in addition to picking up a few additional clients.  And this weekend I am paying the price.

I haven’t had a tarsal tunnel flare up in a few months but I totally overdid it this week (my own fault) and screwed myself and now my ankles have been buzzing since Thursday.  I can’t quite explain the pain to you – but it feels like ongoing electrical shocks in my ankles and at the bottom of my legs.  On top of that, my back is still going out every other day, and my hamstrings have been super tight the last few days (again, self inflicted and I should know better).

I could sit here and write about how horrible my life is and whine about “why is this happening to me?”.  But I won’t because I absolutely do not feel that way.  In fact, I feel the opposite.  I am blessed to have the ability to get up and work out each day.  I am thankful that I have a full belly each night – and that I even have the option of creating healthy meals.

Quite recently I saw a rerun of an old Judge Judy episode where one team mother was suing another team mother of their sons’ football jerseys.  The plaintiff really looked like a smug lunatic and she and her husband kept stating how “upset” they were that the uniforms weren’t what they expected.  Judge Judy then asked “Do you have healthy children?”  To which the plaintiffs responded “yes”.  Judge Judy then said if they were “upset over a uniform they were sickos” and that if they had to “deal with parents who were upset that the lettering was coming off the children’s uniforms when the children are able to run around a football field and healthy enough to do that then you’re all sickos.”

See the point?

I am thankful that I have the opportunity to better my fitness goals.  I am thankful that I have the ability to get up and lift weights and run and jump and teach classes.  I am blessed to live my life the way I do and have the option of making the choices I do.

I think positively.  I work hard.  I eat healthy.  I dance more.  I exercise daily.  I love often.  And I AM HAPPY.

I’m sure you already know that exercise is good for your mental health.

Remember what Elle said about exercise and endorphins in Legally Blonde?

It’s true! Exercise releases endorphins – these endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain, and also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. You know that rush we feel during/after a workout or the runner’s high you hear about so often? That is the endorphins at work.

I speak right now from the heart. For a very long time I suffered from severe depression. I was so sad all the time and for no reason. My heart just ached. This went on for years. It ruined relationships. It put stress on my body and on my mind. And a few times it nearly killed me. I spent many, many years on antidepressants; trying this one and that one but never fully getting over the depression.

It wasn’t until I started exercising that my depression lifted. And the more I exercised the better I felt. The sadness went away, my moods were happier, my soul felt free, and my body was so much healthier.

I spent all those years on medications that seemed to hinder more than they helped. But since I began working out regularly 10 years ago my life completely changed – including my mental health.**

**I am in no way at all endorsing one stop taking medications, especially those with depression or other mental health disorders. Please do not take this as that. I’m merely suggesting adding exercise to your current daily dose and see if it can help. Perhaps a regular fitness program can compliment your current program (whatever that may be – medication, counselling, etc.). If you have any questions talk to your doctor or health professional. See if you can get some of those endorphins flowing. I want you to feel good. I want you to feel your best. And I know that for many, your best may include medications (it did for me). But I also want your heart and your soul to feel great, and exercise *may* be the way to help with that.

30 Day Yoga Challenge

Happy November (and Movember)!

I hope everyone had a great Halloween.  And if you had a great Halloween full of candy and junk then today is perfect for beginning  the 30 Day Yoga Challenge.

I can’t stress enough how great yoga is for one’s body and how everyone can benefit from a yoga practice.  (For a little taste of my yoga preaching go here.)

A daily yoga practice is also a great way to detox your mind, body and soul.

Know yogaI’ve been wanting to post a yoga challenge for a while now and I think that today is a perfect day to start.

The awesome thing about this challenge is that it not only gives you the pose for the day, it also provides a YouTube page (DOYOUYOGA) so you can watch your yoga practice.  Brilliant.

Also, you have the option of doing just your new pose everyday or adding each pose on the next day (ex. on Day 5 you can either do just the Bridge pose OR you can do Downward Dog (from Day 1), Warrior 2 (from Day 2), Cobra (from Day 3), Camel (from Day 4) and Bridge (from Day 5) flowing all together) <<— This is what I recommend but it’s your choice.  Listen to your body – it knows best.

I am so excited about this Challenge.  I hope you will give it a whirl and see how your body feels in a month’s time.
