30 Day Ab Challenge – Redux

I’ve been getting some requests to re-post the 30 Day Ab Challenge from a few years back. That particular post was and has been one of the most-searched posts.  It seems to be pretty popular – especially around this time of year (aka upcoming beach season).

This is a fun little exercise that you commit to participating in over 30 days.  You can do the challenge on its own, or as a complement to your current workout routine.  If you’re already accustomed to working your abdominal muscles, then double (or triple) each day’s challenge.  Push yourself – you’ll be surprised what you can accomplish.

Here’s the Challenge (you can view the original post here):

Butt and Gut 30 Day Challenge

I am really bad with posting challenges at the start of the month.  But then again, a healthy lifestyle change doesn’t (have to) wait til the start of the month so, I guess I’m letting myself off the hook.  I think any day is a good day to start a workout practice or healthy eating program (not diet!!).  In fact, I’m gearing up to start another Whole 30 on Monday – no point in waiting til the start of August when I can feel so much better sooner?

So, with that being said, below is a 30 Day Butt and Gut Challenge to get you going.  Even if you’re new to exercising, this little challenge is totally doable.  And it’s a great complement to your regular fitness practice if you already have one.

And me, I’m a little nuts and completely in love with squats and lunges and planks and crunches.  And pretty much all of it…except push-ups….I hate push-ups! (The result of a serious back injury.)

This Challenge is so great because it’s only four moves but pretty much works your entire body that you can do right in your home!  It also mixes cardio and strength and will definitely get your heart rate going.  And, you get rest days.  TAKE YOUR REST DAYS!  🙂

I love this Challenge so much I’m going to do it along with my regular workouts.  Why not?  Like I said, it can be a great complement to an established fitness regime.

Give it a try and see how you feel in a month’s time.

Cheers.

Spell Your Name Workout

This awesome workout just stumbled across my desk this morning – via one of my awesome bootcampers!!

NAME

This is an easy workout to follow – simply match the letters of your name to the corresponding exercises to design your routine.

For example:  Fit Bitch

F – 20 Arm Circles / I – 60 Second Plank / T – 60 Second Wall Sit

B – 50 Jumping Jacks / I – 60 Second Plank / T – 60 Second Wall Sit / C – 20 Crunches / H – 30 Jumping Jacks

You can do your first name only.  Or do your full name.  Or do the routine several times.  (For fun, you could also choose a bunch of numbers between 1 and 26 and then make a routine based on the corresponding exercises.)

It’s pretty basic.

Have fun!

Get Ecxited! (Day 10)

Excited about Health

I often hear people complain about healthy eating and fitness.

I hear that eating healthy is expensive and exercising is time-consuming – yadda, yadda, yadda.

But I get excited about getting healthy.  For obvious reasons, getting healthy.  But also because it gives me the opportunity to try so many new things – new recipes, new exercises, new fitness classes, etc.

It’s also an opportunity to be social (and be social with people outside of my regular social circle).

Go into your new healthy lifestyle with the outlook that it’s an adventure.  Be positive about it and have fun with it and you’ll love the outcome.

Ringing in the New Year Right

The New Year is just upon us and as we ring the old year out we should ring the New Year in with a commitment to better health and fitness.

And with that I am providing you with the following Full Body Workout for the Week.

This is a kick-start program that will rev your body into high gear.

FULL BODY WORKOUT WEEK

If  you’re new to exercising, remember there are always modifications for the more difficult exercises (like, the burpee*).  As you get more comfortable with the moves they can become more explosive.

What I really like about this week-long program is that it is a full body workout.  My classes are usually full body and I live for a good full body workout myself.

AND, this workout won’t take a lot of time to do so you can ensure that your first week of fitness in 2016 is a success.

(*to modify a burpee simply ease your way down to the floor, get into push up/high plank position, and then get right back up again, reaching high into the air.)

Also, to ensure you start the New Year off on the right foot, here are your Rules for Healthy Living.

Rules for a Healthy Life

I LOVE this!  Rules to live by!

Try these Rules for just one week (longer, please!) and I guarantee you will see a change in your body, in your mood, in your appetite, in your clarity, in your health overall.

Ditch the sugar, ditch the process, ditch the worry, ditch the negativity.  Open your mouth, let out a big sigh, and let it go.

We all want to be at our best.  Exercising and healthy eating and healthy choices and abundantly healthy living will help us to get there.

Happy (almost) New Year!!

Boot Camp Fitness

When I advertise for my classes I get a lot of “what is boot camp?” questions.  I didn’t realize that many people are unaware of this type of training (but I suppose, once upon a time I asked “what is boot camp?”) and so I’ve decided to use this forum to explain to you what exactly my boot camp classes are like.

via Yahoo

via Yahoo

The purpose of fitness boot camp – aside from whipping your butt into shape – is to build strength and endurance.  My classes are jam-packed with cardio (cray-zee cardio) and strength.  And because my classes are based on body weight training I don’t require any equipment (save for a yoga mat so you don’t have to be/sit/lay on the ground or floor).

When most people hear the term “boot camp” they instantly think of the military.  New recruits go off to basic training and boot camp and go through some pretty intense training in order to get their bodies in tip-top shape.  Boot camp is pretty hard core – and so are my classes.

..this ain't no princess-in-training camp.

..this ain’t no princess-in-training camp.

As I said above, my classes are a combo of cardio and strength.  I start with a warm up, we work our asses off for the majority of the hour, and I finish with a cool down/stretching.

I am always coming up with new exercises so that the classes don’t get boring – and I also have some old tried and trusted faves.  I will make you squat.  I will make you burpee.  I will definitely make you sweat!

Your abs will be sore and you’ll have difficulty getting up those stairs the next few days.  But it will get easier.  No, scratch that!  YOU WILL GET STRONGER.  You will build up your cardio and your endurance.  You will need to take less breaks to catch your breath.  And you’ll be able to push up through the entire interval without having to take a knee.

You’ll leave class with your head held higher (I applaud you just for coming) and you’ll walk with a little swagger.  And so you should.

Here are a few things to remember when taking my class:

Gear. Come to class prepared, man.  You need sneakers, a mat, and water (and maybe a sweat towel).  You CANNOT do my class without proper footwear.  It’s dangerous and it’s reckless (for you as a participant and for me as a trainer). You need proper footwear in order to prevent injury.  I want your ass to be sore; I don’t want to kill you.
Water.  Hydration is key to good, everyday health.  But it’s really important to stay hydrated during an intense class – or if you’re an extensive sweater.  Boot camps are designed to get your heart rate up and make you break – and keep – a sweat, so replenishing those electrolytes is important.  Even more important when taking class in the summer.  Which just about kills even me.  Blah.
Disclose of any medical information, etc.  Good Lord people! I can’t even stress how important this is.  Please be sure  to disclose any medical or health issues to any fitness professional you’ll be working with.  I have my clients fill out a lengthy health history form as well as a liability waiver.  And I’m well aware that people lie.  But seriously, this is something that could save your life.  I am the first one to tell my clients that I have a heart condition (I mean, really, how often do you hear that your trainer has a heart condition) so please be truthful with me.
Carb up.  Yep.  You heard it.  Carbohydrate is what fuels your body and without it I expect you’ll be laying in a puddle on the floor in a corner.  I tell my clients to eat something carby (an apple, whole grain toast) at least an hour before my class.  (If you eat too close to class time you’re likely to puke).
Throwing up is okay.  Seriously.  You’re not the first.  You won’t be the last.
Boot camp classes are intense.  I’m not gonna lie.  Be prepared to work your butt off and to do things you didn’t think you were capable of.  Your body will hate you, you’ll hate me.  But you’ll be fine.
Don’t insult the instructor.  Don’t be a dick.  I had a dude come to my class recently.  He’d spent some time in the military and during a conversation after class he said to me “It was a good class.  It’s not boot camp though.”  No, it’s not (military) boot camp.  I’m not wielding a rifle and screaming profanities all whilst preparing you for battle.  It’s a fitness class.  He signed up for a fitness class – he got a fitness class.  He was an ass.  And really – if you’re going to participate just to be an ass, please stay home.
Don’t be afraid to dig deeper (or go lighter).  I tell my clients before and during their workouts “your body will tell you what you’re capable of.”  Don’t be afraid to push your limits (or at least try).  And certainly don’t be ashamed to modify if you need to.  Your body is your temple.  Do what’s best for it.
Don’t forget to pay the lady.  Unless you have made arrangements with me – or if I’ve stated otherwise – come to class prepared to pay.  It irks me to no end when people come to my class and don’t pay.  The same ass from above came to my class and said “I don’t have any money for you tonight.”  WTF??  I specifically told this person – as I’ve told everyone – what the cost is and my methods of payment.  This is a grown ass man!!   And it happens way too often.  It’s not fair to me and it’s not fair to the rest of the participants who’ve paid for the classes.  I mean, when you go to the grocery store do you tell the cashier “I’m taking the milk but I don’t have any money for you”???
I happily offer free classes on occasion.  Unfortunately this is not something I can offer constantly as I have rental fees, insurance, education, dues, and travel expenses to cover during the session runs.  To show up for a class AND participate without intention to pay is disrespectful and, as far as I’m concerned, the same as stealing.  Asshat from above made me so angry that I’ve decided that I will no longer be offering people the benefit of the doubt and will be turning people away at the door.  “Sorry you traveled all this way but if you don’t pay you don’t play.”  It may be bad for business, but that’s exactly what it is…a business.  I’m offering you a service.  It’s not free.  Please keep this in mind when you are intending on attending any type of class.  {End rant.}
Have Fun!  Remember, this is a fitness class.  It’s not military basic training.  It’s supposed to be fun. Try it out.  Don’t take yourself too seriously.  Laugh at me.  Laugh at yourself.  As long as you’re working it at the same time.  Exercise shouldn’t feel like a chore.  There is a lot of camaraderie among the participants.  We have fun.  Come with the right attitude and you will too.

Saturday Workout

It’s Saturday!  It’s the weekend!  I’m sleeping in past 7!!!  (Yay!)  And it’s just a few days ’til Christmas.

I am hosting a Christmas party this evening.  I have a hundred and one things to do today before I even start to get ready for tonight, but I’m going to make sure I get a great workout in in spite of my crazy day.

I know that it’s the time of year when things are bananas and we just seem to run out of time to get everything amid the hustle and bustle, but believe me, you can find the time for even a mini-workout.

Thinking

Do yourself the favor and take a few minutes for yourself.  Try and fit in a little workout today.  Exercise is a great way to release stress and even 5 or 10 minutes can change your entire mood and outlook resulting in a more productive day.

Remember, you’re worth it.

Here’s a great little workout to get you started.  Do it once, twice, three times.  Whatever your pleasure.

30 Day Chest Challenge

Happy October!!

I thought since it’s a new month I’d post this cool Challenge I found.  It’s great for guys and girls and even though it’s a Chest Challenge, you’ll also be working muscles and areas of your body.

As with all the Challenges, you can do this one on its own or accompanying your regular workout routine.

You’ll do it for the next 30 days (just in time for Halloween!), making sure to take your scheduled rest days (and any additional rest days if required).

My only concern with this Challenge is with the Judo Pushups – BE CAREFUL of your lower back!!  This is a great move and performed properly you’ll be fine.  But if you’re new to this move please be overly careful so that you don’t injure yourself.  It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to a potential back injury.  Believe me, I speak from experience.

Other than that, have fun.

Friday Workout

Okay, so, it’s the start of the weekend…IT’S FRIDAY!!!!

And hey, I’m sure you all have plans.  Big Friday Night Plans!

But hey!  If you can spare yourself a few minutes (which you should, because you owe it to yourself) you should give this little Friday Workout a whirl (that’s, of course, if you don’t already have plans for a Friday workout).

See – I know what it’s like to be craving 5pm Friday all day week. And there have been days when I just wanted to let loose (or relax!!) and get on with my weekend plans – and exercising has been the last thing I wanted to do.  But, there’s no reason why we have to give up a workout simply because it’s Friday (or Saturday, or Wednesday, or….).  SO, if you have the time to spare before heading out for a night on the town, or slipping on a pair of cozies and curling up to watch a movie, why not just go ahead and get your Friday workout over with?  C’mon…it’ll be fun.  And your body will thank you.

Have Fun!
