Why I Don’t Offer Meal Plans Online

IHT_MealPlan
I see it all the time; online “trainers”, celebrity or otherwise, offering their meal plans or nutrition advice, or  “…for just $99.99 you can have access to exactly what I eat in a day/week/month…”.
These tags drive me crazy and you’ll soon find out why.
There are so many of these online trainers who will guide (read: tell you) exactly what to eat per his/her typical day, or worse, push keto or some drastic fad or diet on readers.
Here is why I don’t offer online meal plans and why what these online gimmickers are doing is dangerous: NO TWO CLIENTS ARE THE SAME.
So how dare I (or anyone else) treat them the same?  What a 115 lb Instagram trainer eats in a day (or tells you what she eats in a day) will more than likely not be sufficient for most people who are watching her videos or subscribing to a website.  There is no personalization, no background, no medical or health history provided by the “client” – there is simply only a way to pay.  These are all important factors in prescribing a healthier diet in proper nutrition, or weight loss plan.  Individualization is a key component.
I must acknowledge that each and every client is unique.
In addition, I cannot have a preconceived notion of my clients.  I must recognize the individuality.  I need to be able to approach my clients with an open mind so that I can understand their specific and individualized needs.  I also need to understand what contributed to their present state or desire to change their eating habits.  Is there an underlying medical condition?  What is home life like?  Are there any financial contributions to unhealthy eating (can the client not “afford” better quality or healthier foods)?  These are questions that may need to be asked.  And going hand-in-hand with this approach is my understanding of how I can best assist them.
Because is client is different, what works for one person, may not offer the same success for another.  Client A may need better information/education about nutrition, whereas Client B may require full-on support and step-by-step guidance.  As a professional, I have to be humble enough to recognize when a client may need to be referred to a different professional altogether (doctor, psychologist, dietitian, etc.).  Although my clients are coming to me for my expertise, my expertise just may not be enough, and as such, clients who I believe may have disordered eating, health or medical issues, etc. must be referred to the proper practitioner.
Another step in my individualization is having my clients keep a food journal, as well as completing a basic health questionnaire.  How can I assess and provide knowledgeable information if I do now know my clients.  How can an online trainer purport to provide meal plans for clients/followers/readers/Googlers if they do not know each member of their audience.
As a Personal Trainer, I am not qualified to give my clients nutritional or diet advice.  As with any other trainer, it is considered out of my scope of practice.  As a Nutrition and Weight Loss Coach, however, I can provide nutrition advice and guidelines, parameters for healthy eating, support, coaching, etc.  And I certainly recognize the importance that each of my clients is unique and will therefore have unique, if not specific needs.
NWL
In addition, my clients will receive personal, one-on-one coaching from me.  I will work with each of them to discover what approach is best for them, and we will work together to create the best program suited to their individual needs.  You don’t get that with random, generic, online meal plans.  They will also get check-ins with me – whether it’s weekly, bi-weekly, or more or less.  My clients can ask me questions any time and a personal response will be guaranteed.  And since I am certified in both nutrition and fitness, I can also work with clients to design an exercise program that will work for them to ensure it fits their means and lifestyle.  Just as it is with nutrition, understanding that not all fitness levels are the same is just as important if my clients want to see results.
It is truly important to not lose that human touch and to recognize that each person’s needs are unique.  When it comes to health, it’s time to step away from the ease of the internet and to understand why our clients are coming to us, where they need help the most, and offer them the guidance, understanding, and support that a computer – or $99.99 – won’t provide them with.

Goal Reaching

A few weeks ago I was interviewed by a young woman for a small piece she was writing on inspiration and Goals.  I thought I’d share it with you.

18 Again

1. During your life so far, what has been one of the biggest goals you’ve set that you were able to achieve?  I have always had issues with my weight…growing up as the chubby girl.  Overcoming a weight issue has been a goal since I was a child.

2. What did you have to do to accomplish that goal? I began working out regularly and eating better and making better choices in my life.

3. Where did you get your inspiration? I saw a photo of myself one day and did not recognize that it was me.  The girl in the photo was very overweight and I couldn’t believe it was me.  I inspired myself in that moment to fix my life.  I started an exercise program when I got home that evening and have not looked back.

4. Were there any obstacles that got in your way? If so, how did you handle that? What about people? Were there any people who discouraged you while reaching for your goal? I have a heart condition and was told when I was in my teens that I would have a pacemaker by the time I was 30.  I was worried at first about how vigorous exercise might harm me, but in all honesty, my heart is nice and healthy now that the extra weight is off.  I still struggle with it on occasion and it is genetic, but at least I don’t have to worry about jeopardizing my health myself.  As for people…there are always people who want to see you fail.  I still come across those people in my life.  But the worst was a “friend” who told me to stop losing weight because I “look sick”.  It’s funny how she never commented on my weight when I had an extra 60 pounds on me.

5. Did you ever think about giving up? If so, how did you overcome that feeling?  I never thought about giving up. I knew what I was doing was benefiting my life.

6. When you achieved your goal, how did it help you in life? Or what is life like now that you have accomplished your goal?  Once I reached my goal, I looked into how I could help others reach theirs.  I got certified as a personal trainer and as a nutrition and weight loss coach.  I now teach boot camps and other classes and coach people one-on-one.

PS (Thank you Lilly for this.  <3)

Online Bootcamp

A while ago I thought about running an online bootcamp. And then I side-tracked the idea.  But recently, I’ve been thinking more and more about this venture and I have decided I will be offering an online beginner’s bootcamp in the near future.

Online-Bootcamp

I still have kinks to work out, but basically anyone wanting to participate will have to register and commit to the session (6 or 8 weeks with a minimum of 3 workouts a week).  I will also offer nutritional info and advice.

The workouts can be done in the privacy of your own home (or at the gym, or outside; wherever you choose). You will have to be accountable for your workouts each week and submit your finished weekly workout to me.

Likely, I’ll have demonstrations of the exercises and make myself available to participants online – by email or chat (and possibly, if appropriate, by video chat – but this idea is still up in the air as chats would have to work outside of my regular schedule, and I know many of you are subject to time differences).  I’m hoping to create a Facebook group that only participants will have access to.  Which means, in addition to chatting me with, you’ll have the support of other bootcampers.

Please let me know if you’re interested in this new venture as I continue to work it out.  Email me at nsfitnessqueen@yahoo.ca or simply leave a comment here to let me know if you’d be interesting in registering (later), with any questions, and with contact info (for privacy reasons, emailing me is probably the best).

Cheers!

I am pleased to announce that, as of lunchtime today, I am now a CanFitPro certified Nutrition and Weight Loss Specialist!!

I am so excited to be adding this venture my Health and Fitness resume.  And I am soooo happy that the weight and stress of having to study for write an exam is over!

This certification complements the personal training certification.  And, although I really wanted to take this course to educate myself, I knew it would be a bonus to some of my PT and boot camp clients.

To all of you (online and in real life) who’ve supported me through all of this – thank you so much!  You are all rock stars!

And just a note, I am always excited to receive mail, so don’t forget to check out my “contact me” page above if you have any questions or looking for advice or even just want an “attaboy” with your health and fitness goals.

My Mind is Getting a Workout!

Y’know, when I signed up for my Nutrition and Weight Loss Specialist course at Christmas time I honestly thought it would be a breeze.

bookworm21

This particular CanFitPro course is all online – except for the classroom day which, by the way, is next Saturday – and I thought doing an online course would be a piece-of-cake.  I was wrong!

First of all, I hate online courses.  This is my first and likely my last!  I really love having a book – like, an actual paper book that I can flip through pages, highlight notes, write in the margins, and refer to certain page numbers for reference.  This is something I am unable to do right now.  Aggghh!!

Second, depending on what device I’m using – computer, iPod, or tablet – the layout AND page numbers of the online manual are different.  THAT is a complete pain in my ass.  I am a huge note-taker and I really like being able to make a note, write down the page number I found it on, and refer back to it for more info later.  This is also some I am unable to do right now.

Thirdly, depending on the day, the site is sometimes down or I get a page error.  Hello??  WASTING MY TIME!! Not an option!!

I am frantically working my way through this course, trying to get it completed as it is a requisite for next Saturday’s class.  Please be patient with me.  I have not forgotten you.  I have so much to tell and share.

Sadly, it’s Friday night and I will be sitting right here with my computer working away for the next several hours.  Wish me luck.

Another Chapter

I am very excited.  VERY VERY EXCITED!!

I signed up today for my next course – The Nutrition and Weight Loss Specialist certification thru CanFitPro.  This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now.  It’s something that’s important to me and I’m really doing it for my own growth, education, and knowledge….but I’m not gonna lie…earning a little extra cash from it will be nice too.

I can’t wait to blast this banner:

I’m really looking forward to this next chapter.  My fitness instructor got this certification this past year and she tells me there is so much to learn and it’s incredibly interesting.  I really can’t wait.

And fortunately, I don’t have to.  I should be able to access the online portion of the course as early as tomorrow so I will be all over that!  Color this girl happy!

CERTIFIED!!

I am now OFFICIALLY a CanFitPro certified Personal Training Specialist!!  FINALLY!!

via canfitpro

via canfitpro

It has been a long 6 months and I’ve spent more than my fair share of time studying and practicing and I am thankful that this process is over with (because it’s been very stressful) and I’m proud to be a certified member of the fitness community!

My cousin Eliza sent me this lovely little e-card a few days ago:

I am so proud of you. You have reached for the stars and finally, your dream is within grasp. You are going to do so well on your final exam. I have complete faith in you. You are someone I look up to and you make me want to be better than I am. You inspire me to workout harder and become a healthier person. I wish you all the best luck for your final piece in your puzzle of life. Lots of love and prayers from me to you.

Unfortunately, because I haven’t done anything but work and study for the last two weeks I really didn’t look at the card the other day…..so, upon opening it just a little while ago and really reading it, it’s touched my heart and I am thankful to her for such lovely and kind words.

When I decided to pursue my fitness certification it really was just for me….the idea that I’ve inspired someone along the way is still a little weird to me but at the same time I find inspiration in that.

I really am looking forward to seeing where this will take me.  And I truly am proud to be part of this community – which includes all of you!!  Thank you for your support in this journey.

Cheers!

Post-Exam Therapy

My.Exam.Is.OVER!!!!!!

Thank goodness! I wrote last Thursday and it was a process. I studied my butt off for that darn test and, in all honesty, I wasn’t completely ready. I’m still not ready. It’s a lot to know and take in. I am refusing to look at my books until I get the results of the exam – I really don’t want to psyche myself out until the time comes. Right now I’m just trying to relax and stay calm and collected as much as possible until I get my grade. (Passing mark, by the way, is 80% so *FINGERS CROSSED PLEASE*.)

I’ve been in the gym and my classes as regular and made sure that I finished writing the exam as much on time as possible so I could boot it home in time to hit the gym, Zumba and then yoga because, after the stress and anxiety of studying, preparing and writing I definitely needed a good workout or two. And I made sure I got them that night!

Motivation

This certification has been a process. Thank you all for sticking with me and supporting me.

Stay tuned – there’s more in store and Batman is still coming! He writes this weekend and then he’s promised to fulfil his duties as an interviewee. 🙂

I’m Not the Superhero…

Hello my dearies! Listen (re. Read), I know I’ve been a little slacky in the posting department but the bane of my existence lately has been studying.
My CanFitPro Personal Training (written) exam is in one week and aside from my full-time job, fitness classes and regular gym routine, my life has primarily revolved around studying. Bah! Do you KNOW how long it’s been since I’ve been in school? I did not expect a 6 week cram session. (On top of all this I’m also the Maid-of-Honor in my friend’s wedding the week following my exam so seriously, my life is beyond busy right now. But I’m a trooper, dammit!)

I’ve been working my butt off at the gym – my running is going so great – except that I lost my iPod and therefore my running music so I’m now using a cheesy MP3 player that is going to be smashed to bits when I get a new/find my iPod – and the increased strength training even better. I’ve been trying out new things too – new exercises and moves and, I’m just loving it all.

Construction

I’m always excited to try new workouts and new exercises. And this past week I’ve been experimenting a little bit here and there and am absolutely loving the way I feel. I like to feel accomplished at the end of my workouts and these new one leave me feeling just that.

In other news – as some of you (who’ve been reading for a while) may recall, I’ve been dealing with some minor health issues for a while and trying to pinpoint certain things to see what’s the cause of this and that – and for me, most of all, what’s the cause of my weight gain. Last Tuesday I had blood work done on two requisitions. On Wednesday my doctor phoned and said my liver functions were way up and she sent me back for more blood work on Thursday. Now, I have already been diagnosed (several years back) with Gilberts Symdromeso we weren’t surprised that my levels were up and my bilirubin was acting cray-cray. But, when I saw my doctor this week she advised that she is quite concerned about other functions being up and with no explanation. So she gave me another requisition for more blood work. And yesterday she phoned AGAIN and sent over yet another requisition for MORE blood work. At the rate I’m going with these damn vampires I’m not going to have any blood left. I also have an appointment with a liver specialist who can hopefully identify what’s going on within my body. Truth be told, I feel fan-friggin’-tastic!! So, at this point I’m really not that worried.

And stay-tuned…Batman is still coming!

Inspiration/Motivation

As I have mentioned, I recently completed my CanFitPro certification course to become a trainer.  There were about 12 people in my class, split pretty equally of girls and guys of different ages and backgrounds and with different goals.  Although, at first, I was a little intimated, everyone was very gracious and likeable and approachable, and I’ve been in contact with several of my classmates.  But y’know, there’s always that one person….the person you connect with and who you feel comfortable with and who you think you’ve made a life-long friend in.

I met Batman just prior to the class starting – most of us had to travel from different areas of the province and a few of us arrived early.  Batman was sitting at a table with Robin and I asked if I could join them while we waited for the classroom to open.  Over the course of this certification, Batman and I began chatting and have developed a friendship.  And, although he is on the opposite side of the province, I have fallen just a teensy bit in love with him and his motivation, and he’s become my (super)hero.

Batman

This guy and I have had many in-depth conversations and have recognized that we share very similar life events.  Our pasts have been very different but our paths have been so much the same.  So similar, in fact, that I continue to refer to us as the same person.  Thankfully, his sense of humor is as warped as mine so he sort of gets it me.

Batman has inspired me to do and become so much more in the gym; he is a big part of the reason I have decided to Step Outside My Comfort Zone and work on attaining new goals and try new equipment (that, and to rub it in his face that his gym does not have a Smith Machine).  This dude has an incredible past and has accomplished so much and, although I haven’t known him for too long (or too well, for that matter), I feel like he’s just been in my life; like he is the best friend that I haven’t seen in years but we can pick up right where we left off.  I feel incredibly comfortable with him, discussing my goals, my intimidations and fears, and the dark times that have made me stronger – because he’s been through similar.  I gather so much inspiration and motivation from this guy – it’s a little ridiculous.  I am proud to know him.

So, it is with great excitement and pleasure that I announce that Batman has agreed to do an interview with me for a future post!  I cannot wait for you all to meet him and get a little of the insight that he’s shared with me.  I hope that he is able to inspire you the way that he’s inspired me.  And, at the very least, that you can see that your goals are attainable as well.

He is an incredible person; kind, brave, likeable, and dedicated to his fitness and I can’t wait to introduce him to you!

(AND just to note that Batman has pinky sworn an adventure to me and maybe his time in the spotlight will make him hold true to that! So be sure to comment, comment, comment because Fit Bitch loves adventures!)

Cheers!
