30 Day Ab Challenge – Redux

I’ve been getting some requests to re-post the 30 Day Ab Challenge from a few years back. That particular post was and has been one of the most-searched posts.  It seems to be pretty popular – especially around this time of year (aka upcoming beach season).

This is a fun little exercise that you commit to participating in over 30 days.  You can do the challenge on its own, or as a complement to your current workout routine.  If you’re already accustomed to working your abdominal muscles, then double (or triple) each day’s challenge.  Push yourself – you’ll be surprised what you can accomplish.

Butt and Gut 30 Day Challenge

I am really bad with posting challenges at the start of the month.  But then again, a healthy lifestyle change doesn’t (have to) wait til the start of the month so, I guess I’m letting myself off the hook.  I think any day is a good day to start a workout practice or healthy eating program (not diet!!).  In fact, I’m gearing up to start another Whole 30 on Monday – no point in waiting til the start of August when I can feel so much better sooner?

So, with that being said, below is a 30 Day Butt and Gut Challenge to get you going.  Even if you’re new to exercising, this little challenge is totally doable.  And it’s a great complement to your regular fitness practice if you already have one.

And me, I’m a little nuts and completely in love with squats and lunges and planks and crunches.  And pretty much all of it…except push-ups….I hate push-ups! (The result of a serious back injury.)

This Challenge is so great because it’s only four moves but pretty much works your entire body that you can do right in your home!  It also mixes cardio and strength and will definitely get your heart rate going.  And, you get rest days.  TAKE YOUR REST DAYS!  🙂

I love this Challenge so much I’m going to do it along with my regular workouts.  Why not?  Like I said, it can be a great complement to an established fitness regime.

Laughter – The Best ~Ab~ Medicine

Abs = laughter

Is there anything better than laughing so hard your stomach hurts?

I love my workouts but this is how I feel one hundred percent!

I’m fortunate enough to have, honestly, the most incredible friends: my work mates, my besties, my boyfriend, my family.  I believe that laughter can keep us young and healthy, and I’m fortunate enough to spend most of my days with people who like to laugh.  In fact, my lunch breaks are almost always spent with one of my best friends and we laugh non-stop.  I’ve said to her before “Do you think people see us walking thru Town and are jealous at how much fun we are having?”  I mean, honestly, we are laughing nearly continuously.

Last year we were in a shop during our lunch break and having a bust-a-gut moment and a guy kept staring at us and grinning.  Eventually he approached us and told us he wished he could spend his afternoon with us; that we seemed to be having a very good time.  I thought that was great – especially coming from a complete stranger.

Laughter is infectious.  It’s good for the mind, body, and soul.  Laughter is good for your heart, and it’s good for relieving stress, and for healing a sad or bad mood.  And it’s an excellent way to burn a few extra calories.

I’ve gotten into the habit of laughing at everything (myself included)…it’s so much easier to turn a bad moment into a good one.  I’ve even started laughing out loud at the T.V.  I mean, if it’s funny…why not?

Try not to take things too seriously (if you don’t have to).  Enjoy yourself, enjoy life and it’s moments.  And laugh with the ones you love.

Some benefits of laughing: Laughing is wonderful way to get in a little cardio.  And I think laughter is beautiful and adds to our beauty.  People who laugh a lot are healthier – physically, mentally, and emotionally  Laughter is attractive and infectious (go ahead and brighten someone’s day).  Also:

  • Laughter relaxes the whole body.  A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.
  • Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.
  • Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
  • Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems
    • Boosts immunity
    • Lowers stress hormones
    • Decreases pain
    • Relaxes your muscles
    • Prevents heart disease

Cassey Ho’s Waist Whittlers Challenge

Last night at the end of my kickboxing class we worked on our abs – rotating from minute long planks to push-ups – about a dozen times. Starting off, it seemed simple enough but after about the 4th minute I wanted to cry a little…I mean, we’d just done an hour long kickboxing class mixed with some HIIT (high intensity interval training). But if felt great and it was a superb way to end a long work week.

Today was going to be my day off from exercise as I’ve got shin splints and calf muscle cramps and I just need to relax and let my body heal. BUT, I gave into the voices in my head and decided to try a Challenge I’d seen earlier in the week.

Cassey Ho has a great fitness website – Blogilates – and this morning I made it through her Waist Whittlers 100 Challenge. Let me just say that after the ab workout I had last night I probably should have waited a little longer before completing this little workout – I have a feeling my body will be screaming at me tomorrow. Regardless, it was a fun little workout and I will be doing it again. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
